as i prepare to make my first trip to NYC (and the US for that matter) I am interested in hearing what visitors (or locals) views are about their best bargain finds or even any recommendations on what is worth buying in NY? i dont have a lot of money but would love to pick up a couple of things as i always hear about how much cheaper things are in the US. any suggestions would be appreciated.
your best buys....
Whether things are ';much cheaper'; will depend on what currency you%26#39;re using. For Austral. money, things are cheaper (I think). For Euros and pounds, much cheaper.
Without knowing who you are (male/female, young/old etc.) it%26#39;s hard to make any recommendations. Clothes are generally a better buy here for most people and there%26#39;s a large selection. Depending on when you come, there may also be sales. My English family stocks up on clothes (esp. kids%26#39; clothes), accessories like designer sunglasses, handbags, shoes. My stepson bought an expensive camera here and lenses.
Century 21, TJ Maxx, Loehmann%26#39;s, Daffy%26#39;s, Filene%26#39;s are some of the discount stores that have good buys. Macy%26#39;s and Bloomingdales offers visitors an 11% discount off most things if you register at their service desk first before shopping.

thanks nywhiz i think i will try the discount shops you mentioned first. i am a 36 year old female travelling with a friend but will need to bring home some gifts for my husband and sons. hopefully those shops will have something for everyone. i guess i was just wondering what people found was cheaper than europe. i think compared to Ireland the big difference will just be the variety we just dont have here. i have heard some people say they stock up on make up and have heard kids clother are also excellent value so i was just wondering if there were any other must haves!
Hi
I麓m from Sweden and for us shoes and sportswear were very cheap about a third of the price in Sweden. For us everything except groceries and eating out were cheaper than our beloved homecountry. So we had a great time. Unfortuneatly(?) the dollar is becoming a little more expensive for us. We hope that has changed until next time we visit this lovely city.
I recommend: Macys, Century 21(awful cashiers though) and Filenes basement which is by Union Sq.
Have a great time

I bought lots of Benefit and Clinque make-up, which was approx 40% cheaper.
Hubbie bought a few Ralph Lauren shirts from Macy%26#39;s - he said they were half the price he%26#39;d pay back home. He also spent a fortune in GAP; again the stuff in there is the same price in $ as we pay in 拢, so approx. half price.
My bargain was a Calvin Klein black suit from T J Maxx for just $100.
Enjoy your trip!

When i travel to the states, I stock up on Tommy Hilfiger %26amp; Ralph Lauren especially t-shirts %26amp; polo shirts, Also clinique is way way cheaper than Brown Thomas.. If you are shopping for cloths my best advise is go to woodbury commons but have a little home work done before you go, for example there are so many Irish travelling to NY now and we all seem to shop at woodbury, but woodbury%26#39;s stock seems to be mas-produced so be careful when buying. Also hit Brown Thomas before you Travel, price the items you like there make a list see the differance when you do shop in N.Y. I picked out a RL jacket in BT%26#39;s for 300 euro and picked up the exact same in woodbury for around 40 dollars...
Electronics items are also much cheaper here. I%26#39;ve been buying a lot of photo/computer equip lately and am surrounded by Brits, Spaniards and French people in stores - buying like crazy due to the price differential. Last week, I pointed someone here in the direction of discounted digital SLRs and s/he said they are half the price they are in London.
You have to shop around though. The difference in price between 2 electronics stores across the street from each other will be amazing! For example, blank DVDs are $19 at Best Buy and the same exact brand/memory are $39.99 at Staples across the street; the next week the prices will reverse!
evening - good suggestion, BUT visitors must NOT shop for electronics at small camera stores in tourist areas, like Times Square and around the ESB. They are scams. See this:
www.nycvisit.com/content/index.cfm鈥?/a>
Instead, stick with our reputable electronics places like B%26amp;H Photo, J%26amp;R Electronics, Best Buy, Adorama, even Circuit City (which I dislike).
Also, many visitors report here that movie DVDs and music CDs here are cheaper. You can find them at department stores, the stores mentioned above, Virgin, Barnes and Nobles, etc.
Our best buy was at Footlocker (next to Toys r us) where they were doing ';buy one get one free'; on Timberland boots!!!! Just 1 pair is cheap anyway compared to England, so 2 for 1 was the best deal in the world!!!
