Affinia

I am going to new york on 2-6 march, and thanks to all your help before I think I have finally settled on of the affinia hotels. There are three girls going, so shopping, nice resturants and bars and nights out and a good location are the main aim of the trip......I am booking it tonight.....any ideas which Affinia would best suit our needs?

Thanks

Affinia

Hi Pink!

I am organising our next trip to New York and have just booked the Affinia Dumont for the third time. I prefer to stay in 4 or 5 star hotels like yourself and would have no hesitation in recommending it to you. I think its central enough. More importantly its clean and comfortable. Plenty of room for shopping bags! Look at the candid visitor photos they really show you the real deal.

Definitely DONT stay in the Pennsylvanian. I stayed there years ago with friends when we were on a tight budget but never again. Had to change rooms twice. Rubbish left under the bed from a previous occupant. Cockroaches in the bedroom. When I think about it now I just shudder.

We were thinking of staying at a different hotel this time as before we needed the kitchenette as we had a young child with us. Handy for heating bottles etc but after looking around for ages at other hotels and the very mixed reviews have settled back to the Affinia Dumont. You just cant go wrong. Deciding between the different Affinia hotels was tricky. The Affinia 50 was offering a cheap rate but again decided to stay at the Dumont....again look at the photos. It just ticks all the boxes for us. Its not no 2 on the trip advisor list for nothing. Ask for a room on a high floor the views are superb.

We brought in-laws with us the last time and they thought it was lovely and I%26#39;m bringing my Mum with us this time and she is very picky about stuff and I am confident that she will like the hotel. We have booked a Junior Suite for myself, my husband and our 3 year old. Its one huge double bed and a sofabed but I know our little boy will end up with us and there still will be lots of room. We also booked a studio suite which has 2 queen beds in it for the rest of our party. I phoned the hotel directly and they said the studio suite would suit 3 people better. 2 will have to share a bed but like you its family so that wont matter.

I see you are concerned with being hungry! Come out of the hotel turn left onto 34th st and across the road to the left is a big deli/supermarket which is open late. There is a starbucks not too far either. For breakfast in the mornings I would recommend a diner around the corner - left out of the hotel onto 34th street again and left again at the end of the block and its across the road and down a bit which is great for breakfasts ( i have just read what I have written and it seems miles away but in fact is only about 3-5 mins walk) and much cheaper than the restaurant attached to the hotel. I really didnt think much of that restaurant. I think its called the barking dog or something like that, The breakfast was expensive in comparison to other places and we went for dinner one night the last time we stayed and the sevice was poor and the meal luke warm with reheated fries....Yuk! Dont let that put you off the Dumont though.

Another thing I liked about the Dumont its location. Its just off 34th st and takes about 10 mins (ish) to walk to Macys. Also if you are going to Century 21 like we do every year. Its great to dump your shopping and then head up to Bloomingdales its like a halfway point if you know what I mean.

Have a great trip and buy loads!!

Affinia

Hi conors-kangaroo could you please tell me were i can find the Affina dumont, we are thinking of going to new york october 07 and were looking at the affina 50 but i think you have sold me the affina dumont lol. sorry for asking so many questions as i have never posted on the new york forum before and thier are a lot of hotels to choose from feel like giving up, anyway the travel agent tried to get us to book the pennsylvanian hotel but after reading your review and a lot more i dont think so. Thanks polly.

Affinia.com is the mothership for the affiinia hotels. Recommend calling the hotel rather than booking online as you get an even better deal talking to the hotel directly.

Above post should say ';you MAY get an even...'; One never knows...

Thank you voyagereuse will do.

Hi Pollyparkins!

I just think once you have decided on a hotel - and thats the hardest part - its best to shop around for the best price. We booked 2 rooms at the Affinia Dumont.

The Junior Suite was not available on the Affinia website so I booked it on Booking.com as it was showing available there bizarrely and I just gave credit card details to hold the room . They apparently never charge your credit card its part of their policy. So we can pay in cash if I want when we get there.

We also booked a studio suite from the Affinia website as it was cheaper on Affinia.com. The only thing is we had to pay up front for the room by credit card and it is non refundable if we cancel. We decided to go ahead as we are going very soon and dont intend cancelling.

I think the Affinia Dumont is a good choice but I cant believe that travel agent was recommending the Pennsylvanian to you. They obviously hadnt stayed there before.

Best of luck......and watch out New York we%26#39;re coming real soon!
