Would I make any money if I bought a suitcase load of England football shirts with Beckham printed on the back to sell when I come next month?!!
David BeckhamNot in New York City - who cares!
Maybe you want to try L.A.!
David BeckhamBeckham, Beckham ...hmmm ... sounds vaguely familiar -- isn%26#39;t he married to that good looking woman who used to be with that female singing group, the something-or-other Girls? And he is going to be getting a lot of money in California now for ... well, something or other; I read about it in the ';New York Post';. He%26#39;s foreign, right?
And that is about the level of interest you would get... you really must understand that practically no one in the US knows anything about or cares anything about soccer; ';football'; to Americans has one meaning, and one meaning only, and it does not involve the sport Mr. B plays. David Beckham is famous here in the same way Paris Hilton is famous: in other words, he is famous for being famous, and not for anything he actually does or has done.
I was only joking!!!!!
It turns out he%26#39;s going to get paid about 拢80 a second!!
And I congratulate him for it -- I can%26#39;t imagine that anyone here would care that he endorsed a product, which is apparently where most of the money comes from.
Professional soccer in the US is simply a matter of no interest to sports fans in the US -- you would be astonished to discover how many Americans have never even heard of the World Cup. (And when our own national team was doing well in it last time around, no one kenw or cared...) I just asked a serious, avid sports fan I work with to name 5 members of the Mets (baseball), the Yankees (baseball), the Knicks (basketball), the Giants (football) and so on -- and it was a piece of cake. I then asked him if he could name ANY professional soccer player in the US, and he said no. From across the room someone said %26#39;what about that guy who is going to be getting all the money?'; and the sports fan then said .. ';Oh yeah! Beckman, right?';
Do you really think that there is any other country in the world where the name ';David Beckham'; would be so unfamiliar that it would be rendered as ';Beckman';?
GWB - you%26#39;ve got a good job if you can browse this site and work at the same time!!
Give Becks (that%26#39;s David Beckham) a few months over there and a few more people will have heard of him.
Did you know his eldest son is called Brooklyn? I have a feeling he was in NY at the time of .....!!!
Beckman (hah thats great) will earn $250 million dollars over 5 years. What a waste of money.
And unfortunately for people in the US, it means you will also have to put up with his wife appearing all over the place.
Apparently their son was conceived in Brooklyn thats why hes called Brooklyn... Yes they really are that intelligent.
Youd have better luck in this neck of the woods selling t-shirts that read Victoria Beckham.
...written in a tasteful script of course.
While I think that Brooklyn is an odd name to give to any individual who is not a New York City borough, the poor boy is going to learn that in recent years the use of ';Brooklyn'; as a first name has become very popular here indeed, and is now #78 in the Top 100 Baby Names in the United States -- but for GIRLS, not for boys. (It would rather be like naming a boy ';Shirley'; or ';Beverly'; -- it has been done, but still...) Meanwhile, for boys the name ';Brooklyn'; does not even make the top 1000...

My spouse always knew that the second choice for her middle name was Mayfair, but her parents ended up choosing a different name. One day she asked her parents how they came up with that name in the first place and why they scratched it off the list, and her mom said, ';Sweetie, have you ever heard of the Mayfair Hotel in London?....';
What GreenWhiteBlue said about professional soccer in this country is true. The only ones who play it are high-school girls to get their PT requirement.
Many young kids are now on soccer teams and perhaps in 20 or 30 years it may become semi--popular, but I don%26#39;t see that happening any time soon.
He%26#39;s too metro-sexual for a lot of American sports fans.
