Now I know I%26#39;m going to probably inundated with comments of why do you still smoke e.t.c, but it鈥檚 not so much me its the 3 other people I am going with.
We are off to New York on the 25th Jan for a long weekend and would like to know is there anywhere to smoke in New York, and also where can you buy cigarettes and how much are they?
Smoking in New York
I%26#39;ve seen cigarettes on sale at newstands on the streets, don%26#39;t have a clue how much they are, sorry. As for where you can smoke--there%26#39;s a ban in all public places. All restaurants I%26#39;ve been to have been no smoking as have been the bars. Here%26#39;s a link ( it%26#39;s a bit old now, but hopefully it%26#39;ll be of use) showing smoking places.

Price wise, cigarettes are about half the price of what they are over here.
Unless you go to these %26#39;cigar bars%26#39; or the few places who have areas (as listed on that link above), it really is a case of standing outside!
Good practise for your buddies - as that%26#39;s how it%26#39;ll be here from July onwards ;-)
You can%26#39;t smoke in bars in NYC--it%26#39;s the law. You gotta go outside the bar to smoke, which isn%26#39;t fun to do when it%26#39;s freezing cold. But if the weather%26#39;s doesn%26#39;t suck then smoking outside is fun, and a great way to meet new people.
Cigarettes are very easy to find. Practically every block has a 24 hour deli, convenience store or newstand selling them. But they are expensive! On average, a pack of Marlboro Lights or Camels goes for about $7.00. In very crowded, touristy areas, it%26#39;s more like $7.50-$8.00 per pack.
Enjoy your trip!
that will seem cheap to Brits! Cigarettes are even more expensive here.
Smoking is prohibited anywhere indoors to include office buildings, stores, bars, restaurants....about the only place left (other than a cigar bar - for cigars, not cigarettes) is outside in the street or in the comfort of your own home :) Enjoy all!
Thanks guys at least I know I will meet new friends outside the Restaurants and Bars, cant wait, its my first time in NYC.
You probably should stock up at the airport in the duty free stores. The tax on cigarettes in New York is very high and it is like a ';sin tax'; that punishs people that are raising our health costs and harming themselves. While cigarettes are over $7 dollars a pack in the city they are more like $5 a packs in Yonkers and outside the city limits where the taxes are different. I have been to several countries in Europe and I know that everyone still seems to be smoking everywhere I go, which is a bit strange for us New Yorkers to see. I was in Paris last month and I see they now have small non-smoking sections in restaurants. You should know that this is how the non smoking trend in NYC started...so...get ready to start thinking about quiting. A waiter was about to seat me and my wife between two tables that were busily puffing away and I asked to be moved to the non-smoking section which was quite small and in a corner, but there were reserved signs on all the tables. I then asked instead for the ';less smoking'; section. I used to be a smoker but how can you be expected to enjoy your diner with four people puffing away right next to you?
Oh yeah...I would also add that I felt cigarettes taste different here in the States than they did in Europe when I was still smoking. I remember Marlboros I bought in Europe tasted stale to me. I know some foreigners seem to prefer the American mix of tabacco to the brands back home. You might tax advantage of the duty free stores in the NYC airport before you go back home. But if you prefer your own brand and flavor, then bring cigarettes with you and get them in your airport back home.
Law in NYC is the same as in Scotland, you cannot smoke indoors if it is open to the public. We were in NYC last summer and when I wanted to smoke I nipped outside with the rest of the puffers, we had a great time, very sociable. Some non-smokers joined us for the chat, but we just ignored their fresh breath and carried on puffin.
Cigarettes are cheapest at the airports coming in from the UK and going home stock up at whatever airport you are leaving from.
A strange custom in the USA is for strangers to ';bum a smoke';. this means basically that they are begging a ciggy instead of buying them. It happens quite a lot and I think it is people who have ';nearly'; stopped, but because the puffers are having fun outside the bars, they feel left out !!!!!
