What to wear to the theatre??

We have tickets for WICKED and JERSEY BOYS in a couple of weeks for Fri. and Sat. nights. What do we wear to the theatre??

What to wear to the theatre??

As long aas you don%26#39;t show up naked - you%26#39;ll be OK - NYC theater these days is very casual, you%26#39;ll see everything from suits to ratty jeans and the like.

I%26#39;ll be in NYC this weekend and we normally dress smart casual, slacks, sweaters etc.

Don%26#39;t fret, whatever you wear, it%26#39;ll be OK!

What to wear to the theatre??

Don%26#39;t dress like you%26#39;re watching TV at home - hey, it%26#39;s live theatre and the performers can SEE you, and believe me, they notice! - but you don%26#39;t need to break out the tux or evening gown.

Personally, I like dressing neat and more professionally when I go to Bway shows, since I%26#39;m paying good money, watching people work hard to entertain me, and having a nice night out. Enhances the experience, imho.

MORE IMPORTANT THAN DRESS: when attending the theatre, show up on time, don%26#39;t bring your shopping or other large bags. put on some deodorant, go to the restroom beforehand (esp with kids), turn off cell phones, don%26#39; t send Blackberry emails or IMs, don%26#39;t talk or sing along during the show, don%26#39;t kick the seat of the person in front of you, and don%26#39;t unwrap noisy wrappers. (You%26#39;ll be amazed how often people don%26#39;t follow these concepts.)

Keep in mind that NYC is an older city. Many theatres in NYC are very old (some are landmarked), so you might find them ';outdated.'; The older theatres will have narrow aisles, small elevators - if elevators at all - and not that much legroom, and some of the restrooms won%26#39;t have many stalls. If you have a large coat, you might want to check it, or be prepared to squish it behind you.

BTW, this is a VERY popular question on this forum with lots of discussions and suggestions. If you put ';dress for broadway'; in the search box, you%26#39;ll find lots of lively discussions.

Have fun and let us know what you think!

Thanks, Poppa and queensboulevard. I had planned on wearing nice black slacks, nice boots, and sweater, but didn%26#39;t know whether my husband needed to wear coat and tie, or just sports jacket. From your answers, I take it that sports jacket will be okay.

Sports jacket, sweater and collared shirt ought to do it. Both of you may want overcoats depending on the weather. Theaters in Manhattan are open to everyone regardless of dress, but the experience is more memorable if you and those around you dress up a bit in respect for the art form. Above all please don%26#39;t eat or talk during the performance.
