Where's a good deli to get a pastrami sandwich?

I love pastrami here in the UK but I can%26#39;t help but think it%26#39;s a poor imitiation of what you guys have in the US....

We%26#39;ll be staying in Manhattan, where%26#39;s a really good place to get a pastrami sandwich? Oh, and how big are they? (I saw one on a travel show once and I%26#39;d swear it looked like it would feed 4 people!)

Thanks

Staying anywhere special in Manhattan?

Give us a location and we can direct you to the nearest deli.

As for how big they are, depends on the deli.

Let us know where you are saying.

Carnegie Deli, Ben%26#39;s Kosher deli and Katz%26#39;s are the places known for pastrami. There are fans of all of them. Carnegie %26amp; Ben%26#39;s are midtown while Katz%26#39;s is downtown on the lower east side.

Here%26#39;s a list of those considered the best

You should also know that we use the word ';deli'; to refer to a sit-down restaurant that serves traditional Jewish-style food, but it can also mean a convenience store (or bodega), and also any place that makes sandwiches, mostly for take-out. So, you%26#39;ll see pastrami on the menu all over town. To avoid disappointing pre-packed pastrami, go to one of the recommended places. Personally, there%26#39;s no place on earth better than the Carnegie Deli (7th Ave. at 55th St.) for pastrami. They charge $3 to share a sandwich, but it%26#39;s absolutely worth it. They%26#39;ll bring you extra bread, and each sandwich feeds two hungry adults, with a little room left over for their incredible cheesecake (also split a slice... they don%26#39;t charge extra for that!).

The big difference between the two places is that Katz%26#39;s is famous for their hand-sliced meat. It%26#39;s delicious, but IMHO, it%26#39;s a little too thick. I prefer the machine-sliced pastrami at the Carnegie, which is thin and melts in your mouth.

Thank you so much for the very quick replies.

Carnegie Deli it is!

Ohhhh Bettina! Your description makes me so hungry for Carnegie Deli! I love their reuben sandwich as well! Moms

Artie%26#39;s deli rocks! It is on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, on Broadway between 82 and 83rd streets. It is large, and more of a neighborhood place than Carnegie, (which is apt to be crowded with tourists, and more expensive) (closest subway is the # 1, either 79th or 86th street stop.

The Pastrami sandwich is huge. What I usually do is take out half the meat, distribute the remainder between the bread, and then take home the rest, asking for extra rye bread to go.. Or- get some matzoh ball soup or other such thing and share the sandwich.

The Upper West Side is a great neighborhood to explore: Museum of Natural HIstory, Planetarium, New York HIstorical Society, Zabars (food and housewares- a famous store), Central Park, and loads of shops and just a normal residential neighborhood.

Enjoy your stay. We will be off to the U.K (London) in a week. Any food recommendations would be welcome. ( Moderately priced, suitable for a testy meal with a grumpy teenaged boy!)

Hi Emdave, can%26#39;t help with specfics for London I%26#39;m afraid as I%26#39;m a few hours drive from the capital but one %26#39;traditional%26#39; dish which you may to try like while you%26#39;re over here is roast beef and yorkshire pudding.

Hope you have a great time in the UK - it%26#39;s very grey and rainy at the moment!

I vote for Katz%26#39;s. Besides amazing adn lucious pastrami and corned beef, here are a few other reasons:

1. Much cooler neighborhood than Carnegie (the Lower East Side. a short walk to Economy Candy, Tennement Museum, Orchard Street, etc.)

2. Cleaner bathrooms

3. No ';sharing fee';.

4. Upbeat atmo. (No rudeness/gruffness ';schtick';)

5. Weird and unique ';frozen-in-time'; ordering system for self-serve (KEEP YOUR TICKET!) tables

6. You can get a tasting of the meat before you order your sandwich from the counter (don%26#39;t forget to tip!)

7. Amusing signage! ';Send a salami to your boy in the army!';

8. Famous scene in ';Harry Met Sally';. (';I%26#39;ll have what she%26#39;s having.';)

Agree with the Carnegie! Always go there for pastrami. It%26#39;s a real New York experience.

Enjoy!!!

How about this - go to both or, even better, all three - myself, I%26#39;m going to try Artie%26#39;s on my next trip to the City.

Choosing this option will give you first hand information on what you perceive as the best pastrami.

I can taste the sandwich now, yum.
