Hi all
Although I have absolutely no interest in baseball, or even any knowledge of the game, my boyfriend would like to see a Yankees game. Although, I%26#39;m sure he%26#39;s in the same boat as me and I doubt he knows how the game works!
What%26#39;s the difference between the Yankees and the Mets? How long do the games go for?
Other than baseball, is it the season for any other sports during April? I would like to have seen an NBA game and I saw on the Knicks site that there will be four home games played in April.
Crash course in baseball?
the difference is, the Yankees play in the American league, the Mets play in the National league (but both these leagues make up Major League Baseball). The Yankees though have been more successful with 26 World Series titles (Mets only have 2). But both are well supported and well loved teams :-) Me - I have a preference for the Mets!
A game can last a while. There are 9 innings, but if it%26#39;s a tie at the end, they go into extra innings till there is a winner. You are talking 3 hours for a game (can be more, can be less!), but say 3 hours to be on the safe side.
In early April, the ice hockey is still going, so you can catch a Ranges or Devils game. After that it%26#39;s play off season, so if the Rangers make the playoffs (they did last year for the first time in years, and are pretty well placed to give it a good go this year as well), the hockey will go on into May and even June if a team goes deep in the playoffs! New Jersey Devils pretty much get in every year, so you could probably catch a game there in April. They are close enough to New York (only 20 min journey from Port Authority).
Crash course in baseball?
During the month of April baseball, hockey and basketball games are all being played. The baseball season is beginning and the hockey and basketball seasons are winding down.
Everything you wanted to know about baseball but were afraid to ask ;-) well maybe not everything - like what do you put on the hot dog!

If you end up going to a baseball game strike up a conversation with the people next to you. Chances are most people would love to explain the game to you as it is played. Baseball has a slow pace compared to some sports so there is plenty of time to talk in between plays.
Baseball is played outdoors, so bundle up and bring sunglasses because the weather in April can be cold, chilly, mild or warm. A mixed-bag! Basketball and hockey are played indoors.
Seating: for baseball, the closer to ';home plate'; (th bottom of the diamond-shaped field), the better. For basketball and hockey, I%26#39;d suggest seats at center court/center rink. The hockey team that plays in Manhattan at Madison Square Garden is The Rangers.
Let go, Mets!
BTW, the trian ride to Shea stadium is fun with a great view of Manhattan.
Here is a very good previous post about baseball fundamentals:
