I%26#39;ve been reading so many good things about the City Bakery. If we%26#39;re in the Times Square area, is this within walking distance or would we need to take the subway? We%26#39;ll be eating at John%26#39;s Pizzeria at Times Square and I%26#39;m thinking maybe we could stop in there afterwards for dessert. Is it safe to take the subway anywhere at night or are there certain areas we should be careful of at night?
City Bakery, Manhattan
NYC is the safest large city in the world, and is enjoying a stretch of the lowerst crime rate in over 50 years. That means it is safer per person than Syracuse, any day of the week.
It is perfectly safe to take the subway at night - since I take it at 3 pm and at 3 am - but I wouldn%26#39;t go out of my way to use it after 12-5 am, if I was a tourist.
The biggest problem we have is pickpocketing and scams, so keep your valuables and money secure. Don%26#39;t put your wallet in your back pocket, and don%26#39;t hang your knapsack, purse or shopping purchases on the back of your chair in restaurants.
Also, you probably need to get map or use Google maps to see where things are. For subway directions, check out Hopstop

City Bakery is about a mile away from Times Square. It is on 18th Street off of 5th Avenue
If you like walking, it would be nice to walk down Broadway, through the Madison Square Garden area, garment district, and the Flatiron District to get to it.
To get there by subway, I would suggest the following:
Take the #1 train downtown to 18th Street and 7th Ave. Walk two blocks west.
City Bakery is pretty good, but my spouse only goes there for their version of frozen hot chocolate.
BTW, nearby on 6th Avenue bwn 16th and 23rd is a bit of shopping: Old Navy, Filene%26#39;s Basement, Men%26#39;s Warehouse, Barnes and Noble, Best Buy, Burlington Coat Factory, Payless Shoes, Laila Rowe Accessories, The Container Store, and one of my favorite discount stationery stores, Jam Paper.

Queensboulevard- Jam has unfortunately closed that location, though their Third AVenue store is still open.
aoi33 - What!?!? Dang, that stinks. Love that store!
Thanks for the quick tip.
I live in the neighborhood and love City Bakery! Their croissants are almost Parisien...
