We are travelling to NYC next Thursday, Jan 18th for my daugher%26#39;s 16th birthday. We have tickets that night to Wicked and then plan on walking down to Times Square specifically to look for a deli my husband and I found the first time we visited. I think the name was ';Roxy%26#39;s';. Anyway, they had killer cheesecake!
By the way, we are staying in the theatre district, 51st Street, Hampton Inn Suites.
On Friday, we plan on getting up early and visiting the Metropolitan Museum and then walking through Central Park, gettting some lunch and then probably heading to Grand Central, NYC Library, Rockerfeller Center, and possibly the ESB at night.
Saturday we will probably head down to Ground Zero, take the Staten Island Ferry to get the free view and walk across the Brooklyn Bridge. I am not sure what else.
Sunday - head to the airport. Whew!
My questions are:
Is Roxy%26#39;s still there? Am I being too ambitious as to what I want to try and do? I have told my daughter and her friend they can sleep when we return! What are the best subway routes for these destinations? Is Tavern on the Green any good?
Any answers or suggestions?
What to do? What to do?
Your itinerary is definitely do-able without rushing. You may spend more time at the Met than anticipated, ditto for walking in Central Park...
I%26#39;m a big fan of ESB at night. It%26#39;s open later nowadays...
Chinatown, Little Italy, Soho are within walking distance of Brooklyn Bridge, assuming you%26#39;re walking back into Manhattan. Soho on a Saturday night is fun, esp. for an 18 year old.
I think Roxy%26#39;s is still there, at least it pops up on Google. 1565 Bway 212-921-3333
Tavern on the Green is so-so for food, but fun atmosphere.
Buy Metropasses for free bus-subway transfers... I think you%26#39;re closest to the blue subway lines (8th Av)... (http://www.mta.info/nyct/maps/submap.htm)
From the hotel to the Met, take the E (only the E) Queensbound to Lex Av (51/53 St), then transfer to the 6 north (Bronxbound) to 86 St.
If you stay on the east side after your walk in the park, you can take the green subway (Lex Av) down to 42nd St / Grand Central. You can walk to the library (of Ghostbusters 2 fame), the walk to the Rock is a bit longer from there, but not too bad.
From the hotel to Ground Zero, take the E to World Trade Center and you%26#39;re right there. Brooklyn Bridge is 2-3 blocks away. To get to the ferry, take the green line (4-5 only) to bowling green, yellow line to South Ferry, or red line to South Ferry. You may probably need someone to point you in the right direction.
Hope this helps...
What to do? What to do?
I can swear I can picture that Roxy%26#39;s place, but dont know for sure. If not, you will definitely find other good cheesecake here!
Tavern on the Green is below mediocre but priced like a top restaurant. I would go there for drinks at night just to see it lit up if you really want, but there are so many fantastic restaurants here, it would be a shame to waste a meal there.
I must note once again that there is NO ';green line'; or ';yellow line'; on the subway. Referring to the subway system by color is a good way to get lost: the colors are nothing other than a way of drawing an uncomplicated map in midtown, and once out of midtown -- even while still in Manhattan -- trains of the same color go in VERY different directions. NEVER think of the train you take as the ';yellow'; or ';blue'; line, but should instead know the true name of the line you want-- such as the E or the C, or the N or the R.
Just wanted to say to all, thanks for all the help. These forums are the best!
