Staying outside the city - need some tips!

Hi everyone,

Myself, my son, and our son age 8 are coming for four nights in early June.

We would like to either take Amtrak into NYC, or drive to somewhere outside the city, and find a clean, safe hotel outside the city for under $150 a night.

We will need to get back to the hotel on *safe* public transit after a Broadway show lets out at 11 p.m. on a weeknight.

What city/town/area would you suggest? I had a friend here at work that said White Plains, and take the MetroNorth train, but that looks awfully far away?
