Going to New York in a few days time for 4 nights just wondering on your vast experience on eateries in Manhattan what restaurants would you recommend or should I say.... we should not leave New York without visiting.. We seem to always waste time on ';where will we eat tonight?'; So I would like to have an idea before we go. Carmines and Ciprianis in SoHo have been recommended by friends. Couldnt find any reviews of Ciprianis. Also for lunch, Ellens Stardust Diner off Broadway and Katz diner (we were there before and loved it - kept thinking of When Harry Met Sally) There will be 5 adults and 1 child. We are not looking for top of the range restaurants just somewhere that is chld friendly and would be a good experience. Its not just about food. Any that featured on film or tv would also be of interest to us. I saw your list on the Forum but it was so extensive I didnt know how to narrow it down. So if you were looking for good nosh and a great experience where would be your top 5?.
Many thanks.....Conors kangaroo.
Top 5 eateries for a New York experience1. A piece a pizza experience. Either John%26#39;s in Times Square or Bleeker Street, Lombardi%26#39;s in SoHo, or Grimaldi%26#39;s across the Brooklyn Bridge depending on where you will be. (These are all old-school NYC pizza joints featured on Food Network and such.)
2. A cheery Chinese food experience. Chinatown Brasserie for a nice, more upscale dim sum experience than what%26#39;s available in Chinatown. In midtown, Grand Sichuan International or Wu Liang Ye would be good options. For upscale Chinese-fusion, remember Jeffrey Chodorow from The Restaurant? China Grill is one of his mainstays (near Rockefeller Plaza).
3. Meat and potatoes. NYC has a plethora of steak places, some more upscale than others. But it is hard to beat Keen%26#39;s, especially its pub menu, which is very extensive and has something for everyone. Great NYC atmosphere there.
4. A delicious deli. You already know about Katz%26#39;s for pastrami. There are also others including Carnegie, Ben%26#39;s, Artie%26#39;s.... Not too far from Katz%26#39;s is Russ and Daughters, not a deli per se but excellent deli meats, cream cheese, bagels, etc... worth a looksee.
5. Comfort food. Lots of diners in New York, including Ellen%26#39;s which is unique with singing waitstaff but eh on the food...so why not go there for breakfast? For lunch/dinner Cheyenne Diner, Brooklyn Diner, Evergreen, Red Flame. Check out menupages.com, click on a neighborhood and then click on diners and coffeshops and you%26#39;ll get a lot of choices. You can get everything from burgers and meat loaf to shrimp. Enjoy.
Top 5 eateries for a New York experience
Voy, as always, love your posts. I agree completely with the recommendations Voy makes. John%26#39;s is the best. I agree that the food at Ellen%26#39;s isn%26#39;t the best but the singing wait staff is a sure hit with both adults and kids. If you don%26#39;t go for breakfast, go in the evening after dinner for dessert (after 8:00 p.m. when the theatres in the area start). Brooklyn Diner is delicious! They don%26#39;t have a children%26#39;s menu (at least they didn%26#39;t when we last visited) but the waitress will tell you what they have for kids. It%26#39;s usually standard kid fare like spaghetti with meatball (very tasty meatball!), chicken fingers, etc.
I always suggest that visitors try Little Italy. The food is not favored by local New Yorkers but it is a very fun experience. The food is standard fare Italian but the neighborhood of restaurants, bakeries and gelaterias is lots of fun. We like Casa Bella and Il Palazzo both on Mulberry Street. This weekend is supposed to be unseasonably warm again so it should be a nice stroll on Mulberry before or after dinner.
We are heading to town this weekend. We are hoping to try Grimaldi%26#39;s in Brooklyn and hoping, if the weather cooperates, to walk the Brooklyn Bridge. Should be fun! Have a great time on your trip! Moms
Thanks a million Voyagereuse!
Thats a great start and food for thought....pardon the pun!

Sorry Moms! Great info...Thanks to you too.
I see you mentioned the weather. There was an article in the Irish Times that New York was experiencing a heat wave for this time of year and a picture of people in tee shirts sitting around in Central Park but I saw another posting earlier where someone said there was a little snow. Whats going on ?? This time last year we arrived in NYC and had to buy furry hats, scarves and gloves it was bitterly cold We dont mind the cold but I just hope it doesnt rain. Whats the forecast for the weekend like? I need to pack my bag....
Yep, It was downright balmy last week and this week there were snow flurries. I took pictures yesterday before the meager smattering of flakes disappeared.
El Nino is having fun.
Yes, it is amazing. My hubby and kids washed the car in bathing suits last weekend then the kids wore winter jackets with mittens and hats to school yesterday and today. This weekend rain and 59 degrees are forecasted for Saturday and the same on Sunday with rain ending in the morning. Things are crazy! I am bringing along both winter coats and rain coats for all! I am hoping to get some dry weather because everytime we plan to walk the Brooklyn Bridge during a visit it rains. When we don%26#39;t plan to walk the bridge, its lovely...Go figure! Moms
Moms, if you want a laugh, look at what kids in Connecticut were wearing Jan. 6 - scroll down to the third pic.

Love it! Looks like my gang this weekend (minus the sand, but I can dream! ) Moms
Love the photos but thats bizarre weather..... Well its dark and miserable and wet in Dublin today. Lets hope the rain keeps away as much as possible this weekend in NYC.. Shopping in rain is not particularly nice no matter where you are.
