Info to help others in NYC, recent tourist ,not experts

We spent 6 days in Manhattan, 30 Dec to 4 Jan and learned as we went. Maybe our experiences will help you. Here they are, numbered.

1. Do the shows, they are wonderful. Can get great tickets at BroadwayBox.com. The current super shows may not be discounted but you can find great prices for almost everything else and get just wonderful seats up front. This saves you trying to find discounts on day of show by waiting on the street. So much is so good, you can enjoy something every night. without a last minute hassle.

2. Eating: Many top Chefs will prepare their food at lunch time for fraction of an evening meal. We did Jean Georges at lunch and it was most wonderful. This is written for those who want to experience that exquisite extra taste experience. Do the lunch, then use the evening for pizza, hot dogs and pastrami on your way to or from the shows.

3. Make reservation whenever you can. We tried for the River Cafe before Xmas, wanting Tuesday, 2 Jan, and thought would be an off day. Could only get 10PM or later so we cancelled out. As a footnote; we did see that many restaurant could probably accomodate a couple walking in, often not crowded, even though prior reservations might have been a problem.

4. Use the bus. We found them more convenient than the subway. Get a bus map, we found ours at LGA when we arrived. Bus was always there when we arrived of coming down the street. Stops are close together, you should not have to walk more than 1 block EW or 3 blocks NS to find a bus. Much better than subway for shorter trips, at 3+ miles the subway makes sense. Taxi%26#39;s were not always there to jump in, even though they are everywhere. When you want one, all are occupied (top light is out). Seniors can ride bus with medicare card for $1 (must be 4 quarters, get em). On subway for $2 you get a voucher for a return trip. Taxies are often slowed by traffic at certain times which adds to your fare. We wanted to depart taxi when only 2 blocks from Radio City, fare was going up and we wern%26#39;t going anywhere.

5. Can find some astronomical prices for drinks in NY. Will admit that drinks are well prepared. New Yorkers want the best and also evident in the wine prices. If you want to save, have your cocktails in the room. If you pay for my return, I will be there to mix your drinks at your room . Manhattans are my specialty.

6 Look into Airlink for airport transportation. Seniors can go to JFK from Grand Central area for $6.50? each. From your hotel will be much higher.

Hope someone gets useful stuff from our experiences. Have a great vacation. John

That%26#39;s good advice. But your post will get buried in this forum. If you post your message as a ';trip report,'; it might be included with the collection of reports that%26#39;s saved as a ';sticky'; on the forum. That way it%26#39;ll always be accessible for people looking for help.
