Hi! I am trying to book a holiday to NY on a limited budget. I will be staying for 8 days from 4/8/2007- 4/16/2007. Can anyone give me any good advice regarding whether I should choose a cheap hotel or an apartment for my stay? I am hoping to stay around SoHo, Chelsea or the Village.
Thanks for your help!
Hotel or apartment? You need to tell us what you consider ';cheap'; and whether you%26#39;d be willing to cosider a shared bathroom situation. There are not that many proper hotels in the areas you mention anyway so I think you need an apt., inn, b %26amp; b or guesthouse. If you can spend $185/night, you might try
greenwichvillagehome.com
which is an apt.
If that%26#39;s too much and you%26#39;re willing to deal with shared bathroom, have a look at the Larchmont Hotel in the village.
Hotel or apartment? Thanks for your input!
I have been looking at few sites such as: craigslist.com and vacationhomerentals.com, and managed to find some apartments for around $1000-1400 for a week all inclusive. This is much cheaper than the $180 or so, plus taxes, I was considering for hotels. I have looked at hotwire, but I am a bit concerned about taking that kind of chance on accommodation. Priceline seems a lot more suitable, but I%26#39;m unable to bid due to having an Australian VISA.
I have been reading through the tripadvisor reviews, but it%26#39;s been difficult to find a cheaper hotel wth decent reviews. In other areas I was looking at the Wolcott or Bedford Hotels. They seemed to have decent reviews. I guess as I would prefer not to share a bathroom I would consider paying more for a nice hotel or apartment if necessary.
You can certainly try to find an apt. that will likely be less than a hotel (or more space) but depending on the apt., there may still be some tax and/or security deposits and cleaning fees. The more flexible you are about location, the easier it will be though. Neither the Bedford nor the Wolcott are in the areas you mentioned and I think you should be able to do better than either of those if you%26#39;re willing to expand location to midtown where there are many more options. The Bedford, btw, does have apt. like suites with kitchens, but I think the Eastgate Tower owned by the Affinia.com group in the same general area (midtown east) may be a better option. Look at prices on affinia.com and also on quikbook.com and compare.
There are some good apts. on vrbo.com (vacation rental by owner) and I saw some nice ones recently on craigslist but I think when you get to the less than $200/night ones, it starts to get me nervous how decent they are. The problem is lack of reviews and you%26#39;re not quite sure with whom you%26#39;re dealing and have to trust instinct, emails etc.
Have you contacted nyhabitat.com ? A friend from Australia used them and got an apt. she was pleased with. The downside to Nyhabitat is you often get a apt. that someone is living in (but not while you%26#39;re there) so you have their stuff around. But that can also be the case with Craigslist. But using an agent like Nyhabitat, at least they%26#39;ll be responsible for any problems.
I%26#39;ve been looking at nyhabitat.com again :) I was looking at it a few weeks back, but had completely forgotten about it. So thanks for reminding me...there are some nice places on there at decent prices :)
I will also check out the hotels you suggested.
Hi
I%26#39;ve just returned from NYC and we stayed with GVHabitue.com - I have nothing but praise for these landlords. The apartments are lovely and GV is just fantatic to live - even for a week. Plenty of restaurants, a fantastic deli just close by and easy walking to the subway. I think it%26#39;s about $190 per day but so worth it.
The Eastgate Tower looks very nice, and has good reviews. quikbook.com have some good prices for it listed at the moment, so I will keep it as an option and keep looking as it may be a little far from the subway for me to walk by myself at night? I have also been looking into the area in Midtown West as there seems to be more options on that side of town. I guess I will see how it goes. I have come across info on how to bid in Priceline.com as an Australian customer in betterbidding.com as well as this forum. So perhaps that may be my best bet?
And to lynneharvey thanks for the heads up about the place in Greenwich village. Although I adore antique furniture, and the place does look lovely, it may not be suitable as I am in my late 20%26#39;s, and certainly keep unusal hours. I%26#39;d hate the thought of accidentally disturbing anyone else in that sort of environment, as I expect though each suite is private it is still a more intimate environment than a hotel :)
You%26#39;re right ... it is a communual hallway and others would hear you coming and going although I have to say that no one disturbed us during our week there. We have already booked our flights and have just emailed Kevin and Matt to organise the apartment for this trip - must say, I%26#39;m looking forward to it.
It%26#39;s very considerate of you to be concerned for others.
