Hotel Advice Please

This site has been recommended to me by another forum, and it seems a much more popular site, so, I am hoping the experts can assist me.

Coming out of a very difficult period, as a special surprise for my partner, I have recently booked flights to NY, and now looking to book a hotel.

I was thinking of the Holiday Inn Midtown 440 West 57th Street @ $159.00 per night, I have chosen this hotel as I am a priority club member, and this is the cheapest Holiday Inn in NY.

We have friends already booked and paid for through their agent staying at the Radisson Hotel 49 West 32nd street: @ $284.00 per night for 3 nights then $384.00 per night for the remaining 3 nights.

I would feel uncomfortable asking my friends to reconsider changing their hotel, so, apart from the price, I%26#39;m unsure which hotel to choose, I would be stretched at the Radisson rates, although if the Radisson rate was worth it, I can manage it.

As advised, I have looked on the hotel review section of this forum, and the Radisson does not have 100% satisfaction, but then neither does the HI.

As I say, this being a surprise, I would hate the hotel to turn into a disaster, .

Are these hotels very far apart, and what would be the walking distance from each other?

I have looked at several NY maps and the locations between both hotels seems quite far apart.

Looking at the NY maps, I was thinking maybe we could use Times Square as a rendezvous point to meet up with our friends

This trip will be end February.

Hoping someone can give me some advice

Cheers

Hotel Advice Please

I do not believe the Radisson is worth the extra money. I would stay at the Holiday Inn, its a good location. Don%26#39;t be afraid of the subways, they%26#39;re so easy and so safe, you can get an unlimited ride card. Times Sq. is a good central meeting point. I think the Holiday Inn is a better location (W. 57th) than the Radisson (W. 32nd).

You can also check out the NYC hotels on travelzoo, some great rates.

Priority Club is great, even more incentive to stay at the Holiday Inn.

I would not spend the extra money for the Radisson (now, if it were the Mandarin Oriental where I%26#39;d love to stay that would be a different story).

You might look at the Affinian Hotel offerings in New York. Also I have stayed at The Lucerne on the Upper West Side and found it to be very good.

I hate to say it but the Radisson is just awful as several of the review headlines indicate. If your friends can make a change they should. I also don%26#39;t think the HI midtown is all that great but the location is decent and the price you quote is good. The 2 hotels are not that far apart. A subway or bus would get you from one to the other in less than 15 mins. It%26#39;s also walkable (especially for an Englishman ;) While TS is a good middle point, it%26#39;s so crowded I%26#39;m not sure how good a ';meeting spot'; it would be.

If your friends can%26#39;t change and you want to be closer to them, I agree there are a few Affinia hotels that would work. The Affinia Manhattan would be closest, and the Affinia Dumont and the Shelburne Murray Hill are all nearish the Radisson and all good. Look at prices on affinia.com

The Metro is also a decent hotel not far from that Radisson.

You don%26#39;t say when this trip is for, but if it%26#39;s imminent, look on travelzoo.com for hotel specials thru March. Quikbook.com is a good site too for hotel prices.

Hi

May I thank you all for your advice %26amp; comments.

The comments on this site seem more positive for the Holiday Inn, compared to the Radisson, and following your advice, I have decided to stick with HI on 57th, as I will receive my priority points.

Having spoken to my friends who are staying at the Radisson, I have referred them to the comments on this site, although not sure if that was a good idea, as they are a bit apprehensive now.

They have been in contact with their agent, who advised, they can change hotels to the HI, but for an administration fee.

As I say, without your help, I probably would have booked the Radisson.

Cheers

Just wanted to mention the Holiday Inn Express off Fifth Ave. is a relatively new property and rooms will be fresher and more up to date there.

Hi nyhiz

I tried to get that hotel, but it%26#39;s sold out for the dates we are visiting, early March, as you say, it%26#39;s very popular.

;( The location of the one you%26#39;re at is good and rooms are evidently large. I think some of the rooms have been updated so check the ';candid travelers photos'; here and if you don%26#39;t get a room that looks fresh, ask for another. Higher floors will also have some nice views.

Don%26#39;t eat in the hotel (unless it%26#39;s included in your rate). There are dozens of good breakfast places nearby including Rue 57 (upscale)6th ave Cafe (at 57th), MoonRock Diner (57th %26amp; 8th-9th), Brooklyn Diner, Cosmic Diner and Art Cafe. (Look for details on menupages.com by selecting west 50%26#39;s and then diners and coffee shops).

There%26#39;s an Irish pub near your hotel called Kennedy%26#39;s that%26#39;s good and friendly. The Whole Foods Market inside the Time Warner building at Columbus Circle is also not far.

This is our 1st time to the USA, and whilst I booked this as a surprise, I am still apprehensive about visiting a country I have never been to before.

Although we are meeting friends, we do not want to ';Hang Around'; them 24/7 so I was budgeting on some occasions eating in the hotel

Your eating suggestions are most welcome

The help and assistance I have received form this site has been extremely valuable, and I%26#39;d like to thank all those that have assisted.

Can I confirm, you mention about not staying at the Radisson, is this due to the locaton, or the reviews on this site?

You also mention the'; Candid Travellers Photo%26#39;s'; how do I locate them on this site please?

There%26#39;s nothing really wrong with the location of the Radisson although it%26#39;s not my favorite. It%26#39;s near Macy%26#39;s and the Empire State building but it%26#39;s a very commercial busy (unattractive) part of town imo with mostly touristy eating options.

But MOST of all, I don%26#39;t care what time of year, the prices you quoted of $284/$384 are an outrage for that hotel. For late Feb. which is low season, it%26#39;s criminal. You could probably get the Michelangelo which is a wonderful 4* hotel for $295/night on quikbook.com at the end of Feb. It sounds like your friend used a bad travel agent or website.

Assuming you%26#39;re coming the last 6 nights in Feb. I looked on quikbook.com and found MUCH nicer hotels at a fraction of the price

Shelburne Murray Hill which is an all suite hotel for $144/161/night (on affinia.com it may be even cheaper) and you%26#39;d have an apt. with a kitchen. That%26#39;s for a studio (all one big room). For a one bedroom suite (!) it%26#39;s only $170/178/night. This is a lovely hotel.

The Millenium UN Plaza is a glamorous 4* hotel with a rooftop swimming pool and great views from most rooms. Prices are $199/249 on quikbook.

The Casablanca is currently rated #3 here and is $239/night for those dates! (this is all on quikbook) The Michelangelo is even cheaper than I thought at an avg. price of $250/night! It doesn%26#39;t take brain surgery to pick the Michelangelo over the Radisson.

There%26#39;s NO way I%26#39;d pay the price you quoted for the Radisson. Sounds like the travel agent is steering your friend to where he/she will get the best commission. Next time, you want to book this yourselves directly or get a better agent who can get you BETTER prices than you can get on your own, not worse. ;)

To find the candid photos, go to the page with the hotel%26#39;s reviews here and at the top of the page in the top area underneath the address etc., there should be a link for hotel photos, then candid traveler photos. Click that.

Sorry if I got a bit carried away, but I hate to see people taken advantage of.
