Coming back up in April (cannot wait) with my 16 year old daughter and my 14 year old niece. We were up several times last year so my daughter has been able to explore some of the other areas of the city - this time she wants to do the Garment District/Fashion District. I did read some of the other post on this site my main question is there many shops in this area and is it worth the time to explore. Thanks in advance for your help!
Garment District - worth the time
The garment district is where most of the corporate offices are for designers. The stores there would be for fabric and sewing supplies. Unless your daughter has an interest in becoming a fashion designer, it%26#39;s not very interesting. Parsons School of Design is also there, and a kiosk with some info, it%26#39;s mostly geared toward potential students.
Garment District - worth the time
cbcito - Thanks that is what I wanted to know - fashion designer no we are lucky we can sew buttons on in our house that is pretty much the extent of our fashion expertise. I would rather spend the time shopping and looking around in the village.
the only thing you may want to visit in the garment center is the sample sales... you have to know where they are - you cant just wander the buildings... NYsales.com and dailycandy.com are 2 places you can sign up in advance of your trip and they%26#39;ll send weekly emails.
Since you mention buttons - there are quite a few button/bead places open to the public in the 40s-20s on 6th Ave and around. Great place to pick up interesting beads/turquoise/fresh water pearls if they%26#39;re into that (much cheaper than the bead stores that have popped up around the country). I know beading was hotter a few years ago...
