Please Help

Hi everyone,

Myself and my mate are young British lads in our mid 20%26#39;s who are going to New York on Mar 1st for 4 nights. We have been before and have seen the sights that we wanted to see so this time our only mission in life is to have a [responsible!] drink and a laugh!

We have struggled in the past to find places in big cities where we can stumble from bar to bar all night long and end up in a club. With that in mind, we are looking for 4 places with the biggest concentration of pubs/bars/clubs within the smallest area. Our only preferences are straight bars, not too touristy, friendly, younger crowd. We are staying in Midtown, but dont mind travelling across the city as long as we can stay in one spot until late in the night!

Thanks in advance,

Swiss Tony and Big Al

You can find places that meet your criteria on the upper west side on Amsterdam Avenue from W. 74th Street to West 84th Street.

Thanks for your replies.

Have settled on Park Slope (5th Ave) for a night out; and ideas which one is best for what we want (i.e. thur, fri, sat, sun)?

Also, when people talk about the lower east side being a good night out, where exactly do they mean...its a big neighbourhood?

aalindo - Hooray for Park Slope, Brooklyn!!

Note that 5th Avenue in Brooklyn is NOT the same as 5th Avenue in Manhattan! (OK, sorry if that is obvious, but you never know. Esp after knockin%26#39; back a few!)

I%26#39;m guessing you were reading my list of Park Slope bars in one of those posts I linked? Personally, my faves are The Gate, Loki and Great Lakes. They are all stumbling distance from each other. Commonwealth is my other fave, and it is about a 5 minute walk away from the other three.

I%26#39;d also add Lighthouse, Patio Lounge and Total Wine Bar to my original list.

Here is a clickable map of Park Slope. This is the north part, and you can click for the south part. Then you can click on each street and then scroll up and down to see all the businesses on each street

Here%26#39;s another list of Park Slope bars and lounges:

Since you indicated a preference for straight bars, you might want to know - just FYI - that there are two gay bars in the middle of the strip on Fifth Ave - Excelsior (mostly guys, nice patio) and Ginger%26#39;s (mostly females, smaller patio.) But never fear, it wouldn%26#39;t be the worst thing if you accidentally stumbled into them. They are not your typical gay bars. Very welcoming, local, laid-back atmos.

2 brilliant links...thanks so much for your help. If we have a good time i promise to spread the word about BK!

Oops sorry, just one more thing:

I am in the UK military and have recently returned from Iraq. As i understand it from people who have been before, the US is particularly supportive of its troops (if not the war!). I was therefore wondering if there are any discounts on offer for things like Metrocards/Ferry%26#39;s/attractions etc. and also any service orientated pubs/bars/clubs.

Thanks in advance once again,

Swiss Tony and Big Al

Park Slope is great, especially 5th Avenue with all the restaurants. But as long as your heading into Brooklyn, why not Williamsburg which is the hip spot to be at the moment. There are plenty of 20 year olds that are part of the arist community and there are plenty of bars. Take the L train one stop into Brooklyn and get off on Bedford Avenue, the main drag, and everything between Bedford and the East River is happening at night. First visit www.freewiliamsburg.com and click on bars to get an idea of all the selection ( there is also plenty of music ). Here%26#39;s a bar crawl for you, start at Spkie Hill 184 Bedford St (right across from the train station exit on N. 7th St) , walk up the block to Vera Cruz 195 Bedford St (Mex Bar/ Restaurant), LuLu 134 N. 6th St, SEA 114 N. 6th St (happening bar inside a Thai restaurant), Sweatwater 105 N. 6th St, Galapagos 70 N. 6th Street (live music), Laila 113 N. 7th St, Teddy%26#39;s 96 Berry St (old bar near the water) and Brooklyn Ale House 103 Berry Street. Take a bite out the big apple (and as Mick Jagger says) don%26#39;t mind the maggots.

Another brilliant post...the more specific areas the better. Will line Williamsburgh up aswell!

The USO (www.uso.org/) is an organization dedicated to serving military personnel. They may have discount tickets for museums, theater and other sites. For the location of the NYC facility go to the website. I believe the office is in the Port Authority building at 42nd ST. and 8th Avenue.
