Hi, this is my first trip to the USA. My family is travelling to San Francisco, Las Vegas, Orlando, and New York in June/July 2007. Is Manhattan the best area to stay in New York? Also, is it insulting to call an American a yank or yankie? To me it is just like Aussie or Pomm but I was told that some people may take offence. Is this true?

What a great trip your family is taking! It%26#39;s really wise once you%26#39;re here to spend some time after coming all that way.
There%26#39;s nothing quite like feeling one has a pied a terre in NYC, for however brief a period. Sometimes it looks like NJ can be less expensive. But I%26#39;ve seen posts with prices just a good...depends on where you want to stay.
Re yank, I think done with upbeat good nature and sort of jokingly is fine. It might get on some people%26#39;s nerves to hear it over and over in serious conversation....but then I don%26#39;t think it would come up often over and over anyway:) I haven%26#39;t actually heard yankie except with a kindasorta negative connotation in the deep south....as in %26#39;he%26#39;s pretty nice for a yankee%26#39;, i.e. a nawthunuh.
Have fun!

Thanks for the info explorer3. I%26#39;ll just break the habbit of the yankee thing just to be on the safe side.
