50th Birthday - Where to stay in New York

I am thinking of booking a surprise visit to New York for my husband%26#39;s 50th Birthday (coming from the UK). Could anyone recommend reasonably priced Hotels and also in the right area to see all the sites.

Any other information would be greatly received.

All the %26#39;sights%26#39; are not in one area, NYC isn%26#39;t a theme park.

What is your budget?

What do uyou consider %26#39;reasonably priced%26#39;.

NYC is not inexpensive, by any means; another suggestion, get a map/guidebook to familiarize yourself with the area.
