I want a Great Restuarant at a reasonable price. Help Please

Hi,

I have once visited New York in 2001 and it was a fantastic but a very budget minded trip. I am returning in June and this time I have my wife. We want to really do one night out right. Generally we are budget minded but can splurge if the value is there. We are ballroom dancers and want to dance at the Rainbow Room in the Rockefeller Center. It is $200 per person to eat there plus $15 drinks and Minimum tip of 20%. So we are looking at $600 for the evening. Just too much especially when the food reviews are not great. We do plan to go up at 11pm for 2 hours for $45 a person, just to say we were there and dance to the Big Band. We still need a nice place to eat. We will be very well dressed in ballroom attire. We want to go to a place where that will not only be OK, but that generally others are well dressed ( no jeans etc). I would LIKE to spend around $150 US for both of us excluding wine and tip. So for example. Two meals at $50 each and a Dessert at $10 each. That sort of range (cheaper is better LOL). We are not seafood people. We like italion,Steak, Chicken and French Quisine. When spending this much for supper we are less apt to try something new for example Japenesre fusion. Places we have come up with Beppe, BLT Steak etc. I would appreciate all comments and suggestions.

Thanks

Vaughn

Take a look at these nearby places:

Town

Alto

21 Club

Cafe Gray isn%26#39;t too far, either

Read reviews and sample menus on menupages.com (but many of those have outdated prices).

Thanks, That is what I am looking for. Some personnel recommendations. I have been to menupages.com and many , many other sites and travel books etc. It is over whelming. I need to narrow it down. I will look at your recommendations right away.

Thanks!

How about Swing 46, dancing/dinner 349 West 46th Street.

If you had mentioned you had been to menupages.com I would not have suggested you check there!

Some other thoughts

LCB Brasserie is the old La Cote Basque, one of the best French restaurants in town. It%26#39;s not far from the Rainbow Room. They have some prix fixe dinners and a la carte would also work if you don%26#39;t go crazy. It%26#39;s old school French and very nice but not ';fancy.';

Brasserie 8 1/2 is another French option (west 57th st) in a glamorous setting with a la carte and prix fixe/tasting menus

Several of the good steak houses are nearby--Morton%26#39;s, Ruth%26#39;s Chris etc.. Depending on what night of the week you go, you%26#39;re likely to find men in suits from work at these. But you%26#39;re just as likely to find casual dress. Friends of mine went to BLT Steak shortly after it opened to celebrate their anniversary and their only complaint was no one was dressed up, including Barbara Walters. ;) They said they felt like tourists from the %26#39;burbs in their swank clothes.

Don%26#39;t know when you%26#39;re coming but there are some restaurant week promotions coming up and also some other winter promotions that can make some of the fancier places more affordable.

I recommend Chez Josephine. We enjoyed it and it is priced well.
