My wife and I (we live in England) are planning to spend 4 days visiting New York and have a relative living in Nyack.
The price of hotels in New York look to be a bit excessive and it would be nice to be a bit closer to Nyack.
We thought Tarrytown or thereabouts might be a good choice for a place to stay.
Can anyone recommend an hotel within easy reach of transport to Manhattan - we won%26#39;t have a car. Would this be by train or bus.
We would like to pay $100 - $200 per night
Howto get from Tarrytown to New York
The Metro North train runs from Tarrytown to Grand Central Terminal in NYC (mid town). The real express trains take 36 min. (although most express trains take about 42 min.) The ride is pretty--the train rides along the Hudson River. The trains run at least 1-2 times an hour. The Tarrytown trains are usually shorter rides than the trains to geograhically closer stations (Dobbs Ferry, Irvington, Hastings, etc.) because the closer trains are on the local lines that make several stops. If you want the express train, make sure its 42 min. or under.
There are several hotels in Tarrytown. The closest one to the train station is the Doubletree. It is being renovated, and I%26#39;m not sure if it%26#39;s operating. Other hotels are the Springhill Suites (by Marriott), the Courtyard (by Marriott), the Westchester Marriott. There%26#39;s also a Hampton Inn, which is a little farther away. All these hotels (except the Doubletree) are on Rt. 119/White Plains Road (a strip of road with several corporate office buildings). The hotels are technically in Tarrytown, and I think any taxi ride is a flat fee of $5 to/from the train station from these hotels. The Doubletree would be the closest to the train station, but you probably still want to take a taxi (it%26#39;s about a 15-20 min. walk). There%26#39;s also the Tarrytown House hotel (used to be owned by the Dolce group, not sure who the new owner is--usually pretty pricey) and the Castle on the Hudson (small luxury inn--expensive). The Castle is really nice, but if you spend that type of $$$, you could probably stay in NYC.
Taxis are easy to get, but you need to call from the hotel. The largest taxi company is Knapp McCarthey (631-TAXI). Assuming you call at an off peak time, the taxi will take up to 15 min to pick you up. If you take the train, when you arrive in the Tarrytown train station from NYC, taxi cabs are waiting for you--so you don%26#39;t need to call. You might have to share a taxi with other people, though.
Good luck!

Thank you Hurricane for your very comprehensive reply.
I think you have said enough to make us probably decide to pay up and stay somewhere actually in NY since the travelling to and from Tarrytown would eat into our days too much.
Thanks again,
This was very useful as my Boss is in Manhattan and needs to go to Tarrytown to (Bayer offices this is their HQ) and we did not want to by car so thanks again for this info.
