I%26#39;m arriving at EWR and plan to use train/subway to get to GV - can someone advise whether it%26#39;s easy enough to connect and get into Manhattan? I%26#39;ve used the Airtrain from JFK (Jamaica Street/Line E (downtown) to 14th and 8Av) - but if its a lot more complicated I just might opt for a taxi.
EWR to 14th/8av
I%26#39;ve never done it, but here%26#39;s what I think. You first have to take the AirTrain at the airport to Newark%26#39;s Penn Station. From there you can either
%26gt; take the PATH train from Newark Penn Station direct to the World Trade Center (here%26#39;s a map of the PATH trains)
panynj.gov/CommutingTravel/path/html/map.html
and from there switch to the E train UPTOWN and get out at 14th st. OR
%26gt; instead of the PATH, take a NJ transit train to Penn Station NEW YORK and from there get a subway downtown to 14th st. (the E or the A or C)
I don%26#39;t know which option is cheaper or faster.
If you%26#39;re alone, you could also take the Express Bus from the airport to Penn Station NEW YORK (no changing etc.) and from there get a taxi or subway down to 14th st.
EWR to 14th/8av
It Isn%26#39;t much more complicated at all.
The AirTrain from EWR connects you to the trains of NJ Transit at the Newark Airport train station. From there you take the NJ Transit train direct to Penn Station, and at Penn you have the full selection of the A/C/E trains to choose from -- all downtown Eighth Avenue trains stop at 14th and Eighth.
You do not want to go to Newark Penn Station and take the PATH train, because that needlessly adds a transfer -- because to get to Newark Penn, you have to take NJ Transit anyway, and from the World Trade Center you would still need to take the subway.
Just make sure if you are following GWB%26#39;s much simpler directions that you dont get off the NJ Transit train at Newark Penn Station! Stay on until you reach NEW YORK Penn Station.
I just did the trip back from the airport and there was a lot of confusion when the train stopped at Newark Penn Station.
You probably wont remember this, but Newark Penn Station stop is outside on a platform; NEW YORK Penn Station you%26#39;ll arrive underground.
Thanks for your help - I think I%26#39;ll manage it okay by taking the NJ Transit to NY Penn Station and travelling downtown on A/C/E to 14th.
I was totally dreading the subway system last time, but only once we did we make a mistake and got on an express train but realised in time and got off at the next station and waited until the right one came along.
