im planning on proposing on Central Park at dusk, ice skating early evening and going to have dinner at Tao.

Fifth Avenue is residential above 59th Street so shopping/sites begin there (and where you can enter Central Park!) heading down:) Your plans sound magical:) Congrats and Enjoy!

Which kind of shopping do you want.?..like designer (Versace, Gucci, etc.) or more mainstream like AF, Gap, etc. Fifth is a good mix of both; the best shopping being between the Mac store (59th in front of FAO) and Saks; (50th st). I do suggest the massive H%26amp;M.
57th b/n 5th and Madison is great. Bergdorf men%26#39;s (technically thats 58th) is not to be missed. Niketown is fun. Then make a left on Madison for Emporio Armani, Calvin Klein, Barney%26#39;s etc. The block that Ralph Lauren has virtually taken over Madison and 72nd is also another personal fave.
You can find a locater map on the park%26#39;s web site, www.centralparknyc.org (or is it .com?). The beautiful Bow Bridge crosses the Lake from just west of Bethesda Terrace, to the Ramble. The Bridge itself is often crowded. If you can, walk across the Bridge, over to the right is a little rustic shelter. You can see it from the bridge, just a few feet away. Very romantic!

Personally, I think the stores on Madison Avenue in the 60s and 70s are even more luxurious and not as touristy. Check them out!
