hello everyone,
i%26#39;ve been to new york many of times, but not since i%26#39;ve been a member of TA. so i thought i would try and pick your brains before deciding on a good place to stay. i%26#39;ll be up there to visit friends near union square and also my brother at columbia...
i%26#39;m looking for a hotel, preferably in the mid-town area (but definitely does not have to be), and runs in the range of 150-200/night. the place does not need to be spectacular or anything (if it is, i%26#39;m not going to complain) - i%26#39;m looking for a clean room, comfy bed, and not too far from the metro (something that is a 3 star or above). it%26#39;ll be for feb 10-11 (sat-sun).
i%26#39;ve been doing some searches on the usual expedia, hotwire, orbitz, etc, and i%26#39;ve been finding deals for 4 star hotels to be around $225ish.
thank you all for your help! happy mlk day!

Have you thought about priceline? Depending on how busy your dates are you could get a 4 star well within your budget for MTE or MTW.
I got the Grand Hyatt for $120 a night for next week.
There are priceline experts on here who may be able to help with the specifics as will the priceline new york board over on www.betterbidding.com

If you are okay with geting the Grand Hyatt or the W hotel in midtown east (MTE) or the Hilton NY in midtown west (MW) you could give priceline a whirl...
I like to use hotwire as a bellweather, and do not see a hotel matching the Grand Hyatt on hotwire, so it may be too early and GH hasn%26#39;t opened up any rooms yet... but it may be worth a go anyway.
Here is a possible bidding strategy:
You might bid 4*, MTE, $100
If rejected, bid 4*, MTE, MTW, $110
if rejected, bid 4*, MTE, MTW, UES, $120
if rejected, bid 4*, MTE, MTW, UES, UWS $130
That%26#39;s just one strategy there are others. To see what people are getting for priceline deals, check out the NY board on betterbidding.com. It also has pinned lists for both hotwire and priceline showing hotels that have been won.
We stayed at Astor on the Park in Central Park WEst between 107th and 108th. Basic but VERY clean. FRESH sheets, and fresh towels every day. Heating bit noisy, but gets too hot anyway, so just turn it off!!! We got it as a package so not sure of exact room rate, but defo worth a try.
I agree that Priceline would be ideal for a 2 night stay. By bidding 4* in midtown east you%26#39;ll likely get the Grand Hyatt. By bidding 4* midtown west, one of the Hiltons. You must know what a free re bid is before bidding. Go to biddingfortravel.com or betterbidding.com for help. You should be able to get a room for $110-140/night.
If for some reason you don%26#39;t want to do that, there%26#39;s a special for the W Court on travelzoo that would be $199/night plus tax. Nice hotel.
On quikbook, a few of the upper west side hotels (nearer your brother at Columbia) are $179/night. On the Avenue is nice and the Excelsior (a bit olde worldy) is across from the Mus. of Nat. History.
thanks everybody for the info. that betterbidding.com is quite a site. i remember reading about it, but never having the chance to check it out... now that i have, i%26#39;m sure to return to it multiple times. i probably book sometime by the end of this week, so i%26#39;ll let everyone know how i did =)
Just keep in mind sometimes you don%26#39;t succeed on Priceline until the last minute. So consider booking a cancellable reservation and then you can keep trying Priceline up til the last day.
good to know nywhiz... thanks!
i hope you don%26#39;t mind as i pick a little more... if you had a choice where would you want to stay in the city? (not for anything in particular - just a nice area)...
thanks again
please nywhiz....what would be your first choice for a nice area?
I%26#39;m trying to plan a last minute weekend trip and want to bid on PL in the next day or two. Thanks for your input.
Diane
All the NY W hotels have a 3X2 w/e rate (Thurs-Sun nights) when paid with amex.

The Millenium UN Plaza is offering the travelzoo rate of $179 per night on those dates. Although that rate isn`t presently listed on the travelzoo website, it is still available. Call Millenium hotels central reservations at 866-866-8086 and ask for that rate. This is a 4 star hotel and rooms don`t start until the 28th floor so you`re guaranteed a spectacular view. There`s also an indoor pool with amazing views as well. The hotel is on W. 44th St. between 1st and 2nd Avenues and a short walk to the Lexington Avenue Subway line at 42nd St/Grand Central. This is a great deal, especially considering the view and the service here. I`ve never been disappointed at this hotel.
