I will be in NYC with my 16 yr old daughter for a week in Feb. We want to take in 2 or 3 Broadway shows, but cant decide! The seat sales are coming in and some we have talked about are priced from $55 to 75. Not sure of the seating...another question, what type of seating is the best when I book?
Ok, looking for anyones input...what are your top three picks of: RENT, HAIRSPRAY, DROWSY CHAPERONE, ALTAR BOYZ, THE COLOR PURPLE, MAMMA MIA or THE PRODUCERS orrrr....what others...that would be under $100 for a ticket.
Thanks a lot, we need to get these booked!
HELPDecision Time! Broadway Shows, what are your top picks?
Take a look at broadwaybox.com to see what discounts are out there for you. Especially at this time of year, you shouldn%26#39;t have to pay full ticket price.
Of those shows, I%26#39;d recommend Hairspray and Mamma Mia. I haven%26#39;t seen Altar Boyz, or the Color Purple. Drowsy Chaperone is a favorite among contributors to this forum, but I wasn%26#39;t too crazy about it.
What about A Chorus Line, or Avenue Q?
HELPDecision Time! Broadway Shows, what are your top picks?
I%26#39;ve seen Rent, Mamma Mia, and the Drowsy Chaperone. Of the 3, Rent was my least favorite. The Drowsy Chaperone was very entertaining. If you like Abba music, then you will like Mamma Mia. However, the storyline is about a woman who has a daughter and isn%26#39;t sure who the father is--could be one of three men. Some may be offended by that--so it%26#39;s up to you...
I think for her age I would recommend Hairspray, Altar Boyz and Spelling Bee.
I loved The Drowsy Chaperone but not sure it is for her, Rent was just ok for me, she may like it, forget the Producers.
I also very much enjoyed the Color Purple, think this is thought provoking %26amp; moving, but there are themes of incest, etc, so that is your call. Rent also cover adult themes, same with Mamma Mia, so her maturity level %26amp; your comfort level should be taken into account.
There should be discounts for most of these shows.
I can%26#39;t speak for the other shows, but personally ...I saw Hairspray and LOVED it. I even bought the soundtrack when I got home and still listen to it sometimes. It has a great story, uplifting music and the bathroom at the theatre is even done up just like a hair salon! I paid $135 US for my Hairspray ticket (although I%26#39;m sure you can get a much better deal!), and I never regretted it one bit :) Hope this helps....
As for Rent, it seems to be a fave among many posters, but I didn%26#39;t even make it through the movie. I was bored, however if I was in a theatre watching it, I could very well be quite into it.
I think Wicked would also be a great choice - but might be expensive. I saw it in Toronto this December, and loved it!
Good luck!
Seconding Bettina%26#39;s motion for A Chorus Line -- our family%26#39;s favorite, and our daughter is 13. It is a bit off color, but no worse than a PG-13 movie. Don%26#39;t overlook it in choosing! It%26#39;s a great production and not to be missed!
We%26#39;ve seen many of the shows mentioned and for a 16 year old I think A Chorus Line, Mama Mia and even Mary Poppins would work. My favorites for this year, Grey Gardens and Drowsy Chaperone would probably bore a 16 year old silly.
Nobody%26#39;s mentioned Wicked yet? Saw it for the 4th time today, magic!
Mama Mia is great fun, as is Hairspray.
Wicked is hard ticket to get.
If you can get the lower priced tickets, sure, go for it.
Personally, I LOVED Rent! If you do decide to see it, I would recommend watching the movie beforehand. My mother was unfamiliar with the plot and I had to explain (quietly!) to her what was happening at different points.
I also recommend the Lion King. It is certainly not only for children, as the sets, costumes, and music are outstanding.
Interesting to see the London production of Wicked only max 80% full today, less than 4 months after opening.
I%26#39;ve always found matinee tickets for Wicked easier to get, a call to ticketmaster or the box office of the Gerswin should be all it takes.
